What do you do each day that doesn’t contribute to your writing — and can you eliminate it?
(Author: Leo Babauta)

This is a tough one. I’m my own worst enemy when it comes to writing – although having recently participated in NaNoWriMo I’ve proved to myself that I’m absolutely capable of sustained effort, which I had previously doubted. I think I’d have to say the one thing I do that doesn’t facilitate writing is procrastinate. I think, ‘Oh, I’ll just go for a cup of coffee/ cigarette/ bath/ whatever,’ before I sit down to start writing and then suddenly it’s nearly time to go to work or make tea.

What I have been trying, and seems to work, is getting up, having a quick cuppa and then coming straight to the study, in my PJs and pushing myself straight into writing. I’m one of those people who can’t cope with the idea of some impending thing-that-has-to-be-done looming like a black cloud over my view of the rest of the day, so getting things done makes me feel good. Of course, I’m also beginning to realise that by getting up and writing I am able to improve my chances of feeling accomplished and give my day more meaning. Knowing that I have the tools and the power to manipulate my mood and my perception of my day is priceless.
